Emergency Naloxone

Emergency naloxone for use along side epidural infusions is now prescribed and documented in the electronic Medication Management (eMM) system.

Naloxone orders have been built to replicate those seen on the current paper chart and the Australian Medicines Handbook (AMH) recommendations.

  • The order will sit within the PRN segment of the MAR and will display a yellow box icon to indicate it has been ordered as part of the Pain Management Plan.

  • Range frequency prescribing (i.e. every 2 to 3 minutes) is not possible within eMM, the more frequent dose has been built. As the medicine is a PRN, administration can be stretched to every 2 to 3 minutes as required.

  • Administering the medicine will require a co-signature.

Intrathecal Morphine Placeholder

  • The Pain Management Plan now contains a 24-hour ‘placeholder’ for intrathecal morphine.
  • The placeholder will display a yellow box icon to indicate it has been ordered as part of the Pain Management Plan.
  • Following 24 hours from prescription, the placeholder will auto-discontinue and drop off the MAR.
  • The placeholder serves as a visual prompt to notify nursing staff of a morphine dose within the past 24 hours.
  • It indicates the dose, date and time of the intrathecal morphine administration. This is visible by hovering over the order information.
  • The placeholder is not intended to be signed off on the MAR and contains no task tile.

Note: For more information on intrathecal morphine administration, staff should access the patient’s case documentation.
