Opioid Withdrawal Score (OWS)

Overview

An Opioid Withdrawal Score (OWS) can be ordered to generate a task on the Nursing Care Compass and remind nursing staff to document an OWS via iView.

1. It can be ordered by the pain team via the orders page by searching ‘Opioid Withdrawal Score’

2. Nursing staff can start the OWS task themselves by filling out the opioid withdrawal scoring chart in iView

 

Pain Team - Order OWS

· Navigate to ‘Orders Page’

· Type ‘OWS’ or ‘Opioid Withdrawal Score’ in the search field

· Click the order

· Select ‘Yes’ to start the OWS

· Click Sign and enter your password

 

Nursing Staff – Start OWS task

· Navigate to iView

· Under ‘Quick View’ select ‘Opioid Withdrawal Scoring Chart’

· Fill out all required details

· Click the green tick to sign and enter your password

 

Document OWS from Care Compass

· Navigate to Care Compass and find your patient who has an OWS task generated. This task is designed to drop in

  Care Compass every FOUR hours.

· Highlight the task and click Document

· This now takes you to iView to document an OWS. The task will also fall off Care Compass.

 

Stopping the OWS task

Pain team

· Navigate to the ‘Orders Page’

· Complete the order - this will stop the tasks going to Care Compass

Nursing Staff

· Navigate to Care Compass and find your patient who has the OWS task generated

· Highlight the task and click ‘Not Done’

· Choose the specific reason of “Order ceased” – This will stop any further tasks.

NOTE: charting Not Done with any other reason will continue the tasks dropping as this could be a legitimate reason to not be able to do it at that time but the tasks should continue.
