The Recovery Pain Protocol is located in different PowerPlans in the Sydney Children’s Hospitals Network (SCHN) electronic Medication Management (eMM).
Order the Recovery Pain Protocol in a PowerPlan
- Click on +Add next to Orders in the Menu tab
- In the Add Order window search for the appropriate PowerPlan that contains the Recovery Pain Protocol
Note: the below PowerPlans contain the Recovery Pain Protocol
- Click on the PowerPlan you wish to order
- Click Done to exit the order window
- The Recovery Pain Protocol orders are listed under a separate heading within the PowerPlan
- Tick the box to select an order sentence.
- The scratchpad appears.
- Use the weight based dosage schedule to complete the order Details.
For example;
Dose: enter the individual “push” dose micrograms per 1ml (eg. 2 microg).
- Special Instructions: clearly state the total dose to be made up in 10ml (eg. 20 microg in 10ml).
- Duration: Defaults to 4 (hr)s and commences at the time of signing
Modifying the Default Duration for longer cases
- If prescribing prior to the patient entering theatre, it is vital that the duration is extended for longer cases.
- The Recovery Pain Orders policy recommends the below formula to ensure the patient has active pain orders in recovery:
Duration = expected case time + 4 hours
Scenario: If you are ordering the pain protocol now in advance, and the surgical case is expected to go for 2 hours from now,
the duration will be - Duration = 2 + 4 = 6 hr(s)
- Click Orders For Signature
- Sign
- Review all orders on the MAR or MAR Summary
