View PRN Medications

  • Navigate to PRN Medications on the MAR by clicking PRN in the Time View menu
  • Notice how PRN medications float along with the current time (i.e. yellow column)

Oxycodone and PRN Response Tile

Administer the PRN Oxycodone and acknowledge the pain score of 9 that has pulled in from the entry on Gabapentin.

  • Select the PRN Oxycodone

  • Acknowledge the pain score and pain scale that has pulled in from the entry on Gabapentin 
  • If there is no pain score to acknowledge, add a Pain Score of 9

  • One hour after administering certain PRN pain medications, the system prompts you to chart the patient’s response to the medication by populating a PRN Response tile.
  • Acknowledge the pain scale used.
  • Refresh the screen and the PRN Response Tile appears on the MAR in one hour

  • Pretend an hour has passed and chart the PRN Response
    • Click the PRN response tile to open the Medication Effectiveness Evaluation AdHoc form
    • Chart that the time is correct
    • The PRN Medication is effective
    • Pain score is 2 and Scale is 0-10
    • Sign

  • Refresh the MAR and review

PCAs/NCAs (Fentanyl)

  • PCAs and NCAs are ordered on paper
    • See how the medication details say “See paper Pain Management chart for details”
    • See the task tile says “Paper Chart”
  • Orders are only entered into PowerChart as placeholder orders to remind nursing staff to view the paper order and allow for drug-to-drug interaction and drug to allergy interaction checking by the system
  • As a PRN, it will float along with the yellow column
  • Do not sign
