Clinical - Managing an ED patient with active Inpatient Encounter (Switching Encounters) (FirstNet)

Overview

If a patient has a current inpatient or HITH encounter while in the ED, medications must be managed on the Inpatient/HITH encounter and all other charting/ ordering performed on the ED Encounter. Switch between encounters as required.

The encounter location is displayed in the top right of the patient banner bar

Info Column

  • 'i' appears in the info column of the trackboard to indicate ’Inpatient’

  • Hover over the 'i' for more information

CAUTION!!! pop up

  • When opening the patient record in FirstNet, a Caution window opens advising there are two active encounters and what user must do

How to switch encounters

  • Click v  in the menu
  • Double click the inpatient encounter with no discharge date on the Visit List

  • Click Yes on the pop up

  • The X in the Active column will move to the inpatient encounter

  • Check the Location is now the inpatient encounter with no discharge date

  • Switch between the ED and inpatient encounters as required

 

Note

The CAUTION!!! pop up only displays when the user is logged into FirstNet. It will not display if user searches the patient in PowerChart.
